An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
The first four elements above are usually a necessary part of the annotated bibliography. Points 5 and 6 may involve a little more analysis of the source, but you may include them in other kinds of annotations besides evaluative ones. Depending on the type of annotation you use, which this handout will address in the next section, there may be additional kinds of information that you will need to include.

This kind of annotated bibliography is a study in succinctness. It uses a minimalist treatment of both information and sentence structure, without sacrificing clarity. Warning: this kind of writing can be harder than you might think.

The annotated bibliography allows your professor to see the sources you will use in your final research paper. It shows that you have planned ahead by conducting research and gave thought to the information you will need to write a complete research paper. You provide annotations to summarize or evaluate the sources used. The references follow the APA rules for citations and the good news is you have your reference list complete before writing your paper!
Your research log is a private, informal, but internally organized record of your research as it proceeds. Much of it takes the form of quick notes or your own idiosyncratic shorthand. As long as you have kept up with your research log, you have already accumulated the information needed for your annotated bibliography. Use that information to compose a carefully edited, formatted, and arranged annotated bibliography that could be useful to others pursuing your line of research as well as yourself.
A literature review is written in the style of an expository essay; it comprises an introduction, body and conclusion, and it is organized around a controlling question, idea or thesis. An annotated bibliography is an alphabetized list of sources accompanied by comments on each individual source's content, quality, and relevance to the current research.
Procedural Suggestion - Iwould recommend doing the first draft of your annotated bibliographyfirst. This should greatly help you in deciding whether to go with achronological, thematic, problem-oriented or other method of organizing yourliterature review.
4. The Literature Review should be approximately 4 to 5 pages long not counting the annotated bibliography. For the annotated bibliography each entry under a source should be approximately 150 - 200 words long.
Your annotated bibliography will include at minimum six sources. (roughly theequivalent of six 12 to 20 page articles or book chapters. Brownie points andfavorable grading if you read whole books. Also, if it is clear you carefullychose and evaluated the sources.). The sources may include multiple chaptersfrom an anthology, but not just from one anthology.
An annotated bibliography is an alphabetical listof books or articles for which you have added explanatory or critical notes. The annotation is usually written in a paragraph, about 150 words, in which you briefly describe the book or article cited, then add an evaluation and a critical comment of your own. An annotated bibliography differs from an abstract which is simply a summary of a piece of writing of about 150-250 words without critical evaluation.
An annotated bibliography is a list of works you have read on a specific topic, to which you have added brief descriptions or summaries. It's not only a record of your research into a particular topic, it is also a tool that will help other researchers and students in the future. Think of an annotated bibliography as a more deliberate, in-depth review of the literature than what is normally conducted for a research paper.
Finally, assemble your annotated bibliography. Depending on the number of citations you wish to include, you may want to divide your bibliography into more specific subtopics to make it easier to read. As you decide which works to include, remember the overall focus of your bibliography and try to include only works that will help your readers to understand the subject.
